Immigrant Rights

You have constitutional rights:

  • DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR if an immigration agent is knocking on the door.

  • DO NOT ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS from an immigration agent if they try to talk to you. You have the right to remain silent.

  • DO NOT SIGN ANYTHING without first speaking to a lawyer. You have the right to speak with a lawyer.

  • DO NOT CARRY ANY DOCUMENTS FROM THE COUNTRY WHERE YOU WERE BORN. Carry a local form of picture ID instead—a driver’s license, school or work ID. Try to carry proof of your presence in the U.S. before February 2014 such as a phone, gas, or electric bill.

  • If you are outside of your home, ask the agent if you are free to leave and if they say yes, leave calmly.

¡No corra!

All people in the United States, regardless of immigration status, have certain rights and protections under the U.S. Constitution. The Immigrant Legal Resource Center's Red Cards help people assert their rights and defend themselves in many situations, such as when ICE agents go to a home. If you would like to help distribute Red Cards, you can order from the ILRC vendor or download the text to print them yourself.
